MOORPARK AMERICAN LEGION AUXILARY

The Moorpark American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 502, was formed in September 1966. We are a veteran’s organization, a support system for Moorpark Post 502. Without the Post there would not be a Unit.

Unit 502 PRIORITIES

1. Girl' s State :

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 502 selects candidate

The Moorpark American Legion Auxiliary has selected Zoe Sophos as a representative to Girls State , a civics and government program that brings together high school girls from all over the state to Sacramento to participate in civics education and mock government activities. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a scholarship program for applicants.

Zoe is a student at Moorpark High School . She plays tennis daily, loves to read, write and paint. She can quote her biology textbook, Hemmingway, and Dickenson. She is a staff writer for the Moorpark High Newspaper, is earning her Gold Award as a Senior Girl Scout, and dreams of attending Georgetown College , majoring in International Affairs.

On being selected, Joe said, “I am honored and excited to be representing her school at this years Girls State ”.

2. Veterans Lap Robe Program:

The Unit delivered more than 1200 fleece throws, to Veterans Hospitals and Veterans Clinics, in December 2006. Our annual goal is to have every household possible to donate a blanket.  There is a need for this program

In California alone we have 8000 veterans in hospitals, with the war in process, more and more are coming in. We need to support our military.

Donations of throws or monies are gratefully appreciated. (New  fleece throws/blankets 58” x 60” purchased, or 45” x 60 or 72” homemade).

3. Ceremonies:  The Unit joins the Post in two ceremonies each year. We present a wreath, for the Veterans Memorial, at the Memorial Day, and Veterans Day Ceremonies. 8:00A.M. located in front of the Grinder Restaurant at Moorpark Ave. / Los Angeles Ave. The 10:00 A.M.   in the Poindexter Park , 500 Poindexter Avenue . The public is invited to join us.

4. Poppies: Our Poppy program is in May each year. Donations from poppies go strictly to support Veterans. Disabled veteran’s, make the paper poppies, to earn extra monies. The four petals represent

….Dedication…Sacrifice… Responsibility…Compassion

The red petals…stand for the vast outpouring of blood

The black and green center….the mud and desolation of all battlefields.

The green of the stem and foliage …is symbolic of the forests, meadows and fields where generations of Americans have perished to make this land free.

The stem…represents the courage and the determination of our fallen warriors.

The assembled produce… flower…is a symbol of resurrection, which is sure to follow.

Membership: Membership to the Unit is crucial for our survival. Our annual dues are $25.00. We welcome you into our Unit.

Fundraisers:  The Unit has fundraisers as needed. Normally at the July 3rd Fireworks,& during Country Days
